Wolf Tree Impressions
Note: Watch for the “Wolf Tree” piece just written for my “View from Rattlesnake Ridge” column, appearing here on Substack tomorrow.
A serene snowy landscape is depicted, featuring a lone barren tree standing amidst heavily snow-laden pine trees. The sky casts a soft blue hue over the tranquil wintry scene in Bryce Canyon National Park, enhancing the feeling of cold solitude.
The term "wolf tree" likely derives from the idea that these large, dead trees are solitary and imposing in the landscape, much like a lone wolf. They stand out prominently and serve as important habitat and ecological features in forest ecosystems.
The term has been used historically in forestry and ecology to describe large, dead or dying trees that provide a wide range of ecological benefits. These trees often have large cavities, hollows, or decaying wood that provide shelter and nesting sites for various animals, including birds, mammals, insects, and fungi. They also serve as perches for predators, allowing them to survey their surroundings and hunt for prey.
Additionally, as the dead tree decays, it becomes a source of nutrients for soil microorganisms and plants, contributing to soil fertility and overall ecosystem health. This process of decomposition and nutrient cycling is essential for maintaining the balance of forest ecosystems.
Overall, the term "wolf tree" captures the idea of these solitary, dead (or dying) trees as vital components of forest ecosystems, supporting a diverse range of life and ecological processes.
Drawing on a wonderful children's book written by a researcher at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the town of Thornton, NH. "Seeking the Wolf Tree", written by Natalie Cleavitt, a research associate at Cornell University and vegetation survey coordinator at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, and illustrated by Marjorie Leggitt, an artist from Boulder, Colorado, is a story for upper elementary students about an adventure two students take through the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. It communicates core ideas related to the nature of science as well as energy flow and cycling of matter in ecosystems and is a wonderful introduction to a unit on ecology. The folks at Hubbard Brook suggest reading the book at the beginning of the year and using it as a platform for ecological concepts from which to refer back to throughout the school year. Seeking the Wolf Tree is part of the LTER Schoolyard Series of books.
