“Mr President, Abraham Lincoln came to the Congress in the midst of the Civil War . . . this is what he said: ‘Fellow citizens, we cannot escape history. We, of this Congress and this administration, will be remembered in spite of ourselves. No personal significance or insignificance can spare any one of us. The fiery trial through which we pass will light us down in honor or dishonor to the latest generation.’
“Mr. President, I deeply hope that in the midst of our fiery trial we will choose honor.” ~ Senator Angus King
Yesterday, Senator Angus King, an Independent Senator of Maine, delivered a speech on the floor of the United States Senate, named eponymously for the famed "Declaration of Conscience" speech by Senator Margaret Chase Smith, delivered 75 years ago. In the course of his speech, Senator King called on his nation, his colleagues, and his President to act now to reverse the alarming assault of authoritarianism infecting the body politic in the USA once again.
Senator King presented his clarion appeal as a warmly humble personal reflection on the 75th anniversary of Senator Margaret Chase Smith’s speech in opposition to the last great threat to the pluralistic democracy of our founders - Joseph McCarthy. As it happens, Senator King ran the campaign of William Hathaway who finally defeated her in 1972. Yet his deep respect and fondness for her shone through in his remarks.
Senator King called upon the courageous and simple words of Margaret Chase Smith, echoing down through 75 years of American history.
The daughter of a barber and a shoe factory worker Smith was a Republican who was the first woman to serve in both the House and the Senate.
In his remarks, Senator King also praised Democratic Governor Janet Mills who, earlier in the year, had a very testy public exchange with President Trump in which she let it be known that she would honor her state’s laws in spite of Trump’s threats to withdraw state support for Maine schools.
Thank you, Sen Angus King and Governor Janet Mills an Independent and a Democrat, and to the long shadow of Republican Margaret Chase Smith, supporter of voting rights, racial justice, American democracy and so many of the good fights that bring us together at this moment in time.
When we stand and fight together . . . we win.
Senator Angus King delivered his "Declaration of Conscience" as a personal reflection on Senator Margaret Chase Smith’s eponymously titled speech.
