The Circle Turns Again
Throughout the years we've seen the seasons change . . .
A natural abstract image captured on Orris Road Pond in Thornton, New Hampshire.
After my Alice died in 2018, with Zach and Lauren returning to Colorado, my most constant companion was our Husky "Boof" (aka “Boofie”) with whom I would walk daily along Orris Road where we had moved after Alice passed. Boof, of whom I have written extensively, loved to explore the margins and surroundings of a beaver pond at a bend in the road.
Every autumn the edges of the pond would fill with needles from the White Pines along the road, forming intricate patterns - contrasting with the last of the green plants along the pond.
Most folks might wonder how a tree that is "evergreen" could contribute such finery to the water's edge annually, but the White Pine has evolved to lose only a single needle on each cluster every year, enabling it to begin anew every five years, growing needles that reflected the true growth of the tree through the years.
Each year, when the needles appeared in the waters, it created a beautiful swirl of color for my eyes and an item of interest for Boofie but, at the same time, a challenge for his daily drink from the waters of Orris Pond.
The title of the image "The Circle Turns Again" comes from a song by Elton John and Bernie Taupin (Taupin penned the lyrics and Elton wrote the music). The song is one of the shortest but most beautifully written of its time, rivaling McCartney's "In the End".
Seasons 1
"For our world, the circle turns again.
Throughout the year, we've seen the seasons change
It's meant a lot to me to start anew
Oh, the winter's cold but I'm so warm with you
Out there there's not a sound to be heard; And the seasons seem to sleep upon their words.
As the waters freeze up with the summer's end
Oh, it's funny how young lovers start as friends
Yes, it's funny how young lovers start as friends"
